Maxims Holdings, a diversified Board of Investment (BOI) company converted the rooftop of its ultramodern warehousing complex at Old Road, Mulleriyawa into a solar generator, producing 880 MW annually.
It is aimed at cutting energy costs and reducing grid energy reliance. The installation will reduce the company’s annual Carbon Dioxide by 627 metric tonnes (MT). Maxims Holdings believes that renewable energy is crucial to reduce air pollution, improve health and wellbeing, and provide affordable energy access especially in the wake of rising energy costs.
With a system capacity of 640-kilowatt peak power output of a system, the rooftop is the latest addition to the company's focus on sustainable initiatives.
The warehouse situated in a 4.5-acre land will be undergoing phase two to expand the complex with an extent of 75,000 square feet bringing about a total facility area of 140,000 square feet. The extension in phase two will have a similar solar rooftop.
Sri Lanka is expecting to generate 2,000 MW of renewable energy in the next three years. The government is planning to generate 70 per cent of the electricity from renewable energy in 2030 and 100 per cent by 2050.
To meet the country’s climate commitments, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals it is necessary to find ecological solutions to global issues such as climate change which is also aligning with the company's policy. With a considerable extent on the warehouse's roof going for solar energy generation was an obvious solution. The futuristic warehouse has conglomerate Softlogic PLC and Mayphil South Asia as the customers.
Maxims Holdings warehouse solar installation was done by First Energy which is one of the fastest-growing solar power companies in Sri Lanka incorporated as a subsidiary of Pacific Hydro Electric SL (P) Ltd.
